Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire (Northants) is a landlocked county in the East Midlands. It
shares borders with Warwickshire to the West, Leicestershire to the North,
Cambridgeshire to the East, Bedfordshire to the South East, Buckinghamshire
to the South, Oxfordshire to the South West, and England's shortest county
boundary with Lincolnshire to the North East.
The county town, Northampton is the largest town in the county. Other towns
include Kettering, Wellingborough, Daventry, Corby and Rushden.
Watford Gap, literally a gap in the hills, has many southeast to northwest
roads, railways, canals and the Roman Road Watling Street passing through
it. The River Nene, which flows north-eastwards to The Wash begins in
Northamptonshire.
Northamptonshire is known for international motor racing at Silverstone
Circuit, Rockingham Motor Speedway and Santa Pod Raceway (in Bedfordshire).
It has a strong history in the manufacturing of leather and shoes and is the
home of Dr. Martens shoes. The Weetabix factory near Kettering is another
landmark.
