While many courses cover the creative process extensively, ‘Understanding the World of Publishing’ offers a detailed insight into the inner workings of a publishing house, as well as crucial information on the role of a literary agent, and how you can get one. Over three days, this course will:

Give you inside information on how a publishing house functions, and the team that will be working on your book;
Detail the key steps as your novel becomes a book and finally hits the shelves, and how you will be involved in that process;
Cover some of the main terminology used within publishing;
Look at how a publisher markets your book – and how you will be expected to market your book;
Allow participants to consider how to present themselves both online and at public events; and
Offer the opportunity to research an agent for their work, and how you should submit to them.

Featuring a host of useful information, discussion points and practical exercises, this course will encourage writers to think beyond the end of their project and consider what they can expect from both publisher and agent as a debut novelist. Nadene Ghouri has travelled and worked extensively as a journalist in Afghanistan and Pakistan for over a decade. In this talk she will discuss how the people she has met along the way have informed and challenged her pre-conceptions about love, family values, society and individual freedom.

She will also talk about the writing of The Favored Daughter (about the life of Afghan presidential candidate Fawzia Koofi) and what it was like working with one of the most-outspoken women in Afghanistan. A woman whom the Taliban try to murder almost every week.

Alison Weir trained as a history teacher and is passionate about history. Her first book, Britain`s Royal Families, was published in 1989. She has since written a further fourteen history books, including The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Elizabeth the Queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Katherine Swynford and The Lady in the Tower: The Fall of Anne Boleyn. Alison has also published three historical novels, Innocent Traitor, The Lady Elizabeth and The Captive Queen. Her latest history book, Mary Boleyn: “The Great and Infamous Whore”, was published in October 2011 and her next historical novel will be the subject of her talk and is due out in 2012.

Want somewhere to discuss literary classics: past, present and future?

We at Gladstone’s Library know books – with over 200,000 to choose from and visits from some of the UK’s leading authors, we ought to know them well – but we’d like to talk about them much more. So we’re launching a book group, and we’d love you to join us.

Here at the Library you’ll find a warm welcome, literary fiction and intelligent discussion that ranges from the light-hearted to the challenging.
More ‘Newsnight Review’ than academic seminar (though we’ll have some academics with us), we’re aiming for informed discussion between those who are as eager to share as they are to learn. We’ll even be discussing some of the authors that are staying with us this year.

Meetings will be the second Monday of every month, starting on Monday 13th February, 7.30-8.30pm.

Books will be selected by vote and alternate between contemporary and classic literary fiction. To begin with, each book will be less than 300 pages in length (as much as we loved Wolf Hall, it’ll have to wait!). At the first meeting, we will get to know each other and vote on the first two reads.

Wartime Christmas Carol Concerts - RAF Museum London

This festive season the Royal Air Force Museum invites you to take time out from the hurly-burly of the Christmas rush to enjoy a 1940s style Christmas Concert with the Swingtime Sweethearts.

The concerts will commence at 2.30pm on both days underneath the Museum’s Lancaster aircraft in Bomber Hall; and will consist of classic Christmas wartime favourites that kept the home fires burning during the dark days of World War 2 perfectly executed by the girls, as well a traditional hymns and carols for which we would ask that you raise the rafters high.

Each concert will last approximately 75 minutes.

Free Eco-Home open days

Action Surrey is offering Surrey residents the opportunity to receive free, expert and impartial energy and water efficiency advice during the annual English Heritage Open Days 8th-11th September 2011.

Action Surrey’s eco demonstration home based in Knaphill Woking, will open its doors to the public for free during these days without the need to book – just turn up and view.

This year over 3,600 properties across the UK will open together for four days in September to celebrate England’s fantastic architecture and culture. Dr Simon Thurley, Chief Executive, English Heritage recently described the event as “About people and places; it celebrates community and reflects the importance of the built environment in our lives and to our quality of life.”

Oak Tree House is one of the only fully functional demonstration properties in the South of England and has been transformed from an ordinary three-bedroom detached house to a show case property for low carbon living. Throughout the property different measures have been installed including low cost measures such as LED lighting and low energy appliances to help reduce the amount of electricity used in the house to long term measures including a solar photovoltaic system which generates electricity from the sun's energy — this is now generating around £800 year-on-year.

During the four day event Action Surrey’s energy advisors will not only be offering you the opportunity to have a free look around the property but also to discover how you can reduce your energy and water consumption and your fuel bills while at the same time as reduce your carbon footprint.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is as old as recorded history, probably even older, and by using Hypnosis we can communicate with the Unconscious Mind.

Hypnosis is a widely accepted method for helping people make changes at the Unconscious level. Born in Fife in 1954, Iain M Banks is one of the UK's most acclaimed writers of science fiction. Having already carved out a great reputation as a literary writer with novels such as The Wasp Factory and Walking on Glass, his first SF novel, Consider Phlebas, was published in 1987. Since then the Culture series has gone from strength to strength, featuring a number of seminal titles such as Use of Weapons, Feersum Endjinn and Matter. The world’s oldest civic procession

The 2012 Lord Mayor's Show will be on Saturday 10 November at 11am.

The modern procession is over three miles long – almost twice as long as the route it follows – and starts at 11am. It travels from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice, where the Lord Mayor takes an oath of allegiance to the sovereign before the Lord Chief Justice and the judges of the Queen's Bench Division.

The procession sets off on the return journey from Victoria Embankment to Mansion House at 1pm and returns to Mansion House at about 2.30, then the day finishes with one of London's grandest firework displays at 5 o'clock from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges.
